How do I know if my child is ready for piano?
Most children are ready for formal piano lessons around age 7 or 8. At this stage, their hands are physically strong enough to press the keys correctly, and their brains are developed enough to stay focused for a 30-minute lesson. If they know their ABCs and can sit still for a short story, they are likely ready to start!

Every child is different, but developmental research shows that a few key "milestones" make piano lessons much more successful (and fun!) for a student. Here is what to look for:
1. Physical Milestones: The "Hand" Check
Around age 7, the small bones in a child’s wrists and fingers go through a period of "ossification," which means they become stronger and more solid.
-
Fine Motor Skills: Can your child tie their shoes or use scissors with ease? If so, they have the hand-eye coordination needed to move individual fingers on the keys.
-
Finger Independence: Try a fun "wiggle test." Can they wiggle just their ring finger without moving the others? This level of control usually clicks right around the 7-year mark.
2. Cognitive Milestones: The "Brain" Check
By ages 8 to 10, children reach a "golden window" for learning.
-
Attention Span: Research in child development shows that by age 8, a child's ability to focus on a task increases significantly. They can follow multi-step instructions (like "Find middle C, use your thumb, and play it softly").
-
Reading Readiness: While you don't need to be a top-tier reader, knowing the alphabet (A through G) and understanding left-to-right progression is a huge help. If they can follow along with a picture book, they can follow a music book.
3. The "Interest" Factor
This is the most important sign! Does your child:
-
Pick out tunes on a toy keyboard?
-
React with excitement when they hear music?
-
Ask you when they can start "real" lessons? Motivation is the "secret sauce." A child who wants to be at the bench will progress twice as fast as one who is forced to be there.
What if they aren't ready yet?
If your child is 5 or 6 and full of energy, don't worry! They might not be ready for the "sit-still" nature of a formal piano lesson, but they are perfect for group music classes or rhythm games. These build the "musical foundation" (beat, ear training, and melody) so that when they hit that age 7/8 milestone, they can hit the ground running.
The Bottom Line: If your child is at least 7, can follow directions, and shows an interest in music, they are in the perfect spot to begin their musical journey!
